Vulnerable, Rather than Helpful

Some bleeding-heart religious liberals do not bleed enough. They have a help-and-run hierarchical approach to victims, moving to new victims when the old victims get partly to their feet. They don’t, as Rita Nakashima Brock says, “hang in there for long-term mutual transformation, because they would have to make themselves deeply vulnerable, rather than helpful.” And they often prefer helpful.

-sobering words from Daniel C. Maguire in “Whose Church? A Concise Guide to Progressive Catholicism”. Highly recommended, the book is engagingly written and full of compelling insights.
